FAW (3 Day Course)

Course Overview
Under UK Health & Safety law, employers must provide trained First Aiders in the workplace. This course gives staff the confidence and skills to respond quickly to medical emergencies, helping prevent escalation and reducing the risk of long-term absence. Attendees will learn how to use First Aid equipment and an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) safely and effectively.
Course Aim
The aim of this Emergency First Aid at Work course is to equip learners with the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond effectively to a range of workplace emergencies. Through hands-on, practical training and expert instruction, participants will learn how to assess casualties, provide immediate care, including CPR and AED use, and manage common injuries and illnesses in compliance with UK Health & Safety regulations.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- Respond safely and effectively to a range of workplace emergencies
- Use First Aid kits and AEDs with confidence
- Understand legal responsibilities under Health & Safety regulations
- Keep clear, accurate records following an incident
- Apply hygiene best practices during treatment
They’ll also be able to assist casualties who:
- Require CPR and AED use
- Are unconscious or unresponsive
- Have bleeding wounds or are in shock
- Have fractures, sprains, or other musculoskeletal injuries
- Are suffering from burns, eye injuries, or poisoning
- Show signs of minor or major illness
Participants will also learn how to safely move a casualty if necessary.
Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for anyone nominated to be a First Aider in the workplace, in line with the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
Duration
3 Days (18 hours of in-person training)
Certification
Your participants will receive a Certificate of Competence, based on your Training Centre accreditation. Currently I can deliver this course in conjunction with FAIB or Qualsafe Awarding Bodies.
Course Content
Day 1: Foundation Skills
- Key principles of First Aid
- Casualty assessment and recovery position
- CPR and AED use
- Breathing difficulties: choking, asthma, electric shock
- Responding to unconsciousness, stroke, heart attack
Day 2: Injury & Illness Management
- The circulatory system explained
- Treating minor and severe bleeding
- Bandaging and dressing wounds
- Recognising and managing shock, seizures, and diabetic emergencies
- Managing fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries
Day 3: Legal & Practical Applications
- First Aider roles and legal duties
- Workplace First Aid kits and HSE compliance
- Treatment of burns, eye injuries, and poisoning
- Emergency scene management
- Handling major incidents
- Practical assessments and final review

Suggested Progression
HSE recommends annual refresher training. To maintain certification, learners must complete a First Aid at Work Requalification course within three years.
