Emergency Paediatric First Aid

Level 2 – EPFA (1 Day Course)

Course Introduction

This one-day (6-hour) practical course is ideal for individuals working with infants and young children who need essential first aid skills for responding to emergency situations. The programme is especially relevant to those employed in early years settings, including nurseries, schools, after-school clubs, and childminding services.

Course Overview

The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course provides a solid foundation in dealing with time-critical situations involving babies and children. The training is interactive and hands-on, encouraging learners to develop confidence while practising key life-saving techniques in a relaxed and supportive environment. The session is suitable for both new and existing childcare professionals.

This course aligns with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) as set by the Department for Education and meets current guidance for paediatric first aid provision in childcare settings. It is assessed throughout the day by the course trainer, with no formal examination required. Upon successful completion, learners will be awarded a certificate valid for three years.

Course Aim

This course aims to give learners the competence and confidence to deal with a wide range of paediatric incidents and emergencies.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this training, learners will be able to:

    • Understand the responsibilities of a paediatric first aider, including correct documentation and first aid kit requirements
    • Assess emergency situations and determine the best course of action
    • Respond to a baby or child who is unresponsive (with or without normal breathing, including use of an AED)
    • Assist in cases of choking, seizures, external bleeding, and shock
    • Provide initial support until professional help arrives

Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for early years and education staff who need to meet EYFS requirements or wish to enhance their emergency response skills. It is particularly relevant for:

  • Nursery and pre-school staff
  • Primary school teaching assistants
  • After-school club workers
  • Childminders and nannies
  • Support workers in childcare settings

As per government regulations, newly qualified staff in early years roles are now expected to hold a valid paediatric first aid certificate. This course offers a cost-effective way to meet this requirement.

Duration

1 Day (6 hours of guided learning)

Certification

Training is delivered under the quality standards of recognised awarding bodies. Centres may choose to offer this as an FAIB-approved programme or as a nationally recognised qualification through Qualsafe Awards, for which an additional certification fee applies.

Compliance & Guidance

According to Ofsted’s Early Years and Childcare Register, at least one staff member with a full paediatric first aid certificate must be available at all times when children are present, including during off-site activities. This course can be used as a supplementary qualification alongside the Full Paediatric First Aid (Level 3) to meet staffing requirements based on each setting’s risk assessment.
